Project
Summary
The study will (a) analyse ICT usage in the food machinery/user segment
of the food supply chain and (b) make recommendations for the most advantageous
enhanced use of ICT. (It should be noted that a Food Processing Faraday
has just been established, with PPMA a member.)
Need
A large proportion of the food processing machinery sector, particularly
within SMEs, is based on traditional mechanical concepts and skills. The
sector is generally weak in the application of the newer information and
communication technologies. This study aims to evaluate the opportunities
of using tried and tested information and communication technologies,
from other sectors, within the processes used by the food processing machinery
sector to supply and service their products.
Solution
Study still in progress.
Benefits
The benefits to the food processing machinery sector are expected to be:
- Improved products leading to increased marketability and therefore
market share
- Reduced new product development and customisation time
- Reduced product servicing costs
- Enhanced product functionality
The benefits to the food processors will be:
- Better response to customer demand –new and existing products
- Reduced costs, - waste labour, space, energy, utilities, materials
and inventory
- Improved product consistency
- Improved safety and environmental performance
- Increased output
