Project Summary
ICTISS surveys and reviews the state of ICT and its usage within the UK shipbuilding and shiprepair and ship conversion sector; it will analyse the state of the art, research suitable technologies from other sources and assess the suitability of carrying them to the subject sector. The project also gives a useful sample update of an analysis of the sector undertaken ten years previously, providing a background of ICT uptake since then and pointing towards future trends. The intention was to lead to a Full Collaborative Project Proposal, as foreseen in the ICT Carrier programme.

Need
The industry makes extensive use of ICT mainly in technical areas. A study in 1992 identified a shortfall in use for management information systems, and particularly in SMEs. It resulted in some useful developments. ICTISS has the key objective of revisiting the industry, ten years on, to report on current use of Information and Communications Technology and, once again, to identify what future developments will benefit the sector, especially SMEs.

Solution
The final report points the way ahead, identifying short term actions and the potential for further detailed work in this areas.

Benefits
Substantial benefits could be realised in efficiency, costs and data mining.
